If your gums appear to bleed when brushing or flossing or are tender and swollen, you likely have the early stages of gum disease. If left untreated, pockets can form, separating the tissue and teeth. Should your dentist discover these symptoms, they may recommend scaling and root planing or “deep cleaning.” But how much does it cost? Will dental insurance help alleviate some of the financial burden? Read on to find out how much you can expect to pay and what you can do to prevent needing this procedure in the first place.

What is Scaling and Root Planing? Why Is It Necessary?

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process commonly recommended when gum disease is present. It is a non-surgical solution designed to improve the health of these soft oral tissues (gums), encouraging them to reattach and heal over time.

The first step, scaling, involves using specialized instruments to remove hardened plaque and tartar from teeth and above and below the gumline. The second step, root planing, requires reaching deep into the gum pockets and smoothing out the roots of affected teeth. Doing so makes it harder for bacteria to adhere, and your gums will begin to reattach to your teeth.

Does Dental Insurance Cover This Type of Treatment?

It is believed that scaling and root planing (SRP) can cost a few hundred dollars out of pocket if you do not plan to use your dental insurance; however, this may be different for each person.

Depending on the type of treatment you receive (preventive or therapeutic SRP) and how many quadrants your dentist addresses, the price may be higher or lower.

Generally, dental insurance will help cover a portion of the cost associated with SRP, but it’s important to review your policy before agreeing to receive treatment. Some companies categorize this type of gum disease treatment as a major restorative service, so they’ll cover up to 50% of the cost.

How Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?

If the idea of having your teeth and gums treated with scaling and root planing isn’t something you want to experience, there are things you can do to keep your smile healthier and free of infection, such as:

  • Flossing daily. Even if it is just once a day, removing harmful particles between teeth can safeguard your gums from accumulated plaque and tartar.
  • Seeing your dentist every six months. Regular dental checkups and cleanings allow for early detection of gum disease so that immediate treatment can be administered, and more invasive procedures can be avoided.
  • Giving up smoking and tobacco products. This unhealthy habit increases your risk of gum disease because it suppresses your immune system, so it’s harder to fight off infection.
  • Using gum disease-specific mouthwash. In addition to brushing twice each day with fluoridated toothpaste and flossing at least once before bed, incorporate a therapeutic mouthwash designed to protect against gum disease.

Gum disease is one of the leading oral health problems that dentists treat regularly. Taking a proactive approach to reduce your risk is essential; however, if scaling and root planing is required, know that you don’t have to break the bank to get the smile-saving care you need.
